Short Stay Hospital
Our Short Stay Units are specially designated and designed to provide short-term treatment, observation, assessment, and reassessment for patients who have been initially triaged and assessed in the Emergency Department (ED). Our aim is to deliver high-quality care while ensuring an efficient patient journey and improved clinical outcomes.
Benefits of our Short Stay Hospital Service:
Reduced Patient Length of Stay: By utilising our Short Stay Units, we aim to minimise the time patients spend in the Emergency Department, allowing for a smoother flow of admissions and discharges.
Decreased "Did Not Wait" Cases: We strive to reduce the number of patients who "did not wait" by promptly accommodating their needs in our Short Stay Units, ensuring timely care and attention.
Improved Clinical Outcomes: Our dedicated healthcare professionals closely monitor and assess patients in the Short Stay Units, enabling us to provide appropriate interventions and treatments, leading to improved clinical outcomes.
Increased Emergency Department Turnover: With the availability of our Short Stay Units, we can effectively manage patient flow, optimising the utilisation of resources and ensuring a higher turnover rate in the Emergency Department.
Our Short Stay Units include:
- Short-term Treatment: Our units are designed for patients requiring short-term treatment, observation, assessment, and reassessment. The length of stay in these units does not exceed 24 hours.
- Specific Admission and Discharge Criteria: We have established clear admission and discharge criteria and procedures, ensuring that patients are admitted and discharged in a timely manner, based on their individual needs.
- Physical Separation: The Short Stay Units are physically separate from the acute assessment area of the Emergency Department, providing a dedicated space for focused care.
- Treatment Spaces: Our units have a fixed number of treatment spaces equipped with essential facilities such as oxygen, suction, and patient toilet facilities, ensuring the comfort and safety of our patients.
- Not an Overflow or Waiting Area: Our Short Stay Units are not temporary overflow areas for the Emergency Department. They are specifically designated for patients who require short-term treatment and are not used solely for patients awaiting an inpatient bed, medical imaging, or treatment in the Emergency Department.
By offering our Short Stay Hospital Service, we aim to enhance the overall experience and outcomes for our patients, with the following additional benefits:
- Improved Emergency Department Patient Journey: The availability of Short Stay Units streamlines the patient journey, reducing wait times, and ensuring prompt access to appropriate care.
- Increased Patient Satisfaction: Our focus on efficient care delivery and reduced waiting times contributes to higher patient satisfaction levels.
- Improved Length of Stay: Through effective management and appropriate interventions, we strive to minimise the length of stay for patients, leading to a more efficient healthcare experience.
- Enhanced Efficiency of Emergency Departments: By optimising the utilisation of resources and facilitating smoother patient flow, our Short Stay Hospital Service contributes to the overall efficiency of the Emergency Department.
