Dr Helen was born and raised in Townsville. After high school, she moved to Sydney to study dentistry, graduating in 2002 from the University of Sydney with her Bachelor of Dental Surgery. After graduation, she worked for four years as general dentist in numerous clinics in the Hunter Region.

Years of treating adults with poor dental health drove her return to Sydney and specialise in Paediatric Dentistry. This way she could provide education and treatment during childhood, preventing the lifelong damage from happening.

Dr Helen graduated with her Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry (Paediatric Dentistry) in 2010. She was appointed first as a Senior Registrar and later, Staff Specialist at the Westmead Centre for Oral Health, as well as Visiting Staff Specialist for the Hunter New England Oral Health Service. Dr Helen Fung has also volunteered to provide dental care to children in orphanages in Vietnam, as well as with the indigenous populations in the Northern Territory.
